A wet day in Goteborg

Raining to day so we are having tourist day in Goteborg.
We have travelled from Grenaa in Denmark to Vargerg in Sweden over the Baltic Sea on a 5 hour trip.
We have obviously left the flat lands of Holland, Germany and Denmark behind as the few days in Sweden has seen us encountering our first real hills and undulating terrain. The coastal geography is quite different with rocky outcrops, forests and lots of off shore islands. The people are very friendly and almost without exception speak English.
Maps however seem very hard to find especially for cycling so our trip through Goteborg tomorrow will be interesting and time consuming (its a big place)

Last day in Denmark

Had a great time since our last post. Weather has been very kind to us and the last few days have been in the mid to high 20's with little wind consequently the miles have ticked by on the odometer. Best of all we have been to the very tip of Denmark and stood with one foot in the North Sea and the other in the Baltic Sea, if that makes sense! The whole trip up the west coast was superb and now having come down the east coast through lovely forests and green farm land over undulating hilly country roads has been magic.
Tomorrow we are going to have a go at getting a ferry to Sweden even though we have not booked it so this will be our last post from a very nice Denmark. This computer has no USB so can't put on any pics yet maybe the ferry will have internet, its a 5 hour boat trip across the Baltic Sea.

Denmark continued

We arrived today in Blokus right on the coast. While the weather hasn't been particularly favourable for the last week it has not prevented us from making good headway through western and northern Jutland. The last few days have seen us cycle through the Thy National Park which covers 244 square kms in a 12 km wide zone consisting of sand dunes moors, conifers forests bounded by the North Sea on one side and fiords on the other. There has been a huge variety of terrain and tracks from brand new tarmaced cycleways beside highways through forest tracks and even a grass track! This really is a very nice part of Denmark. All up the coast are the remains of German built WW2  defence bunkers as part of Hitler's 'Atlantic Wall',  as he expected an invasion from the North Sea. It was an errie feeling going down into a bunker and looking out to the North Sea through the narrow slot in the concrete. We are only a couple of days away from Skagen at the northern most tip of Denmark.

Cottage in the country

A day off.....

After 7 continuous days of cycling, time for a day off to do the washing. Also managed to find a decent sized bike shop 10 kms away in Ringkobing, one of Denmark's oldest market towns. We rode over and had the bikes serviced, bought a spare tyre and much needed bungies.
 A couple of hours walking round Ringkobing revealed a very nice wee town. The barometer has dropped a staggering 19 hPa over the last 6 hrs so we suspect a big weather change any time. The wind continues to blow in Denmark

At last a camp site with internet access where we can relax and bring you all up to date. The last post was a quick one as a fellow camper loaned us his lap top and we didn't have much time. One unfortunate disaster. Somehow Chas has managed to                                            
delete a heap of photos from  the camera so there will be no pictures from the last week in Germany including our trip to Sylt and the islands off the coast of Germany. So here we are day 3 in Denmark having clocked up our first 1000kms as we crossed the border. A noticeable difference in culture from Germany. The strong winds are still with us but not always in our face.  Today wind peaked at 44kms an hour. The camp grounds we have stayed in so dfar in Denmark are salubrious with 5 star quality facitities including white tablecloths on the dining room tables. It is great having somewhere to cook and eat as previously in Holland and Germany  we  had to do it in the tent. At the moment we are travelling up a narrow sandy strip of land about 1 km wide with the sea on one side and a fiord on the other. Google earth Hvide Sande because it is worth a look.Here are some photos from the last few days.

Into Denmark

Saturday we arrived in Denmark. The border was uneventful. The last few days through Germany were eventful. We travelled from Dagebull by ferry out to the German outer islands. We first went to Amrum which is a holiday area for the Germans and then took the ferry to Sylt which is an up market holiday place. We then travelled by train to Neisbull but had some difficulty because they were on strike and the place we wanted to stop at the train just went straight through. We got back on track and headed to the border. Yesterday we got wet for the first time but did manage to get the tent up without it getting wet. We have had the wind behind us for the last couple of days and what a difference it makes.
